MacBick LabBioScore™ Methodology

Is Your Lab Performing at Its True Potential?

The LabBioScore™ is MacBick’s proprietary 100-point laboratory assessment — measuring five critical pillars of lab performance so you know exactly where your facility stands, and what it will take to get to 100.

AVERAGE FIRST-AUDIT SCORE ACROSS MACBICK CLIENT LABS

What Is the LabBioScore™?

LabBioScore™ is a structured, evidence-based scoring system developed by MacBick Labs and Interiors to evaluate the operational health of any research or clinical laboratory. Every lab receives a score from 0 to 100, broken down across five weighted pillars. The score isn’t a judgment — it’s a diagnostic. A LabBioScore™ audit tells you precisely what’s working, what’s costing you money, and what risks are hiding in plain sight.

The Five Pillars of LabBioScore™

Each pillar is independently scored 0–20. Total = LabBioScore™ out of 100.

Space & Layout Efficiency
20 PTS

Measures how well the physical space supports workflow. Evaluates bench configuration, aisle clearance, instrument placement, and zoning of clean vs. contamination-risk areas.

01

17–20

Optimal workflow zoning; no cross-contamination risk; ADA-compliant

12–16

Minor inefficiencies; layout mostly functional

7–11

Workflow bottlenecks identified; some compliance gaps

0–6

Significant redesign needed; safety/compliance risk

Equipment Functionality & Calibration
20 PTS

Assesses whether instruments are properly calibrated, maintained, and appropriately matched to current research needs. Includes service log review.

17–20

All instruments calibrated within schedule; service logs complete

12–16

Most instruments current; 1–2 gaps in documentation

7–11

Multiple overdue calibrations; reactive maintenance pattern

0–6

Instruments out of service or undocumented; compliance risk

02
03

Energy & Resource Efficiency
20 PTS

Quantifies energy consumption patterns, fume hood sash discipline, -80°C freezer load efficiency, water usage, and waste generation against benchmarks.

17–20

Energy use ≤15% above LEED lab baseline; waste minimization protocols active

12–16

Moderate overconsumption; some optimization habits in place

7–11

Significant inefficiency; no tracking system; high utility cost exposure

0–6

Critical waste; no protocols; likely high operating cost

04

Safety & Compliance Readiness
20 PTS

Reviews chemical storage, biological safety cabinet function, fire egress, SDS binder currency, PPE availability, and regulatory documentation against OSHA/CDC/EPA standards.

17–20

Full compliance; documented training; no open findings

12–16

Minor gaps; corrective actions defined

7–11

Multiple findings; training not current; audit risk

0–6

Critical non-compliance; immediate remediation required

05

Workflow & Operational Intelligence
20 PTS

Evaluates SOPs, data management practices, inventory systems, staff onboarding documentation, and whether AI or automation tools are being leveraged for operational gains.

17–20

SOPs current; inventory automated; digital data trail complete

12–16

SOPs exist but inconsistently followed; partial digital adoption

7–11

Key processes undocumented; manual inventory; inefficiencies visible

0–6

Minimal SOPs; no system; operational risk high

How a LabBioScore™ Audit Works

Four steps. Typically 2–3 weeks from request to full report.

01

Initial Intake

Submit your audit request. We review your facility type, size, research focus, and any prior audits or compliance findings. A MacBick specialist schedules a 30-minute discovery call.

02

On-Site or Virtual Assessment

Our team conducts a structured walkthrough using the LabBioScore™ rubric. We photograph, document, and test against 47 discrete checkpoints across the five pillars. Remote audits use video walkthrough + document submission.

03

Scoring & Analysis

Each pillar is scored independently. We benchmark your lab against comparable facilities. We identify your top 3 'score killers' and your fastest wins.

04

Report Delivery & Debrief

You receive a full LabBioScore™ Report — PDF + interactive summary — with your overall score, pillar breakdown, annotated photo evidence, and a prioritized remediation roadmap. Debrief call included.

Request a Free LabBioScore™ Audit of Your Lab

We take on a limited number of audit clients each year. Request yours now — no cost, no commitment. You’ll receive your LabBioScore™ report within 3 weeks.

Your information is never sold or shared. MacBick may follow up by email or phone to schedule your audit intake call.

Frequently Asked Questions About LabBioScore™

What is LabBioScore™?

LabBioScore™ is MacBick’s proprietary 100-point laboratory assessment system. It evaluates any research or clinical lab across five performance pillars — Space & Layout, Equipment Calibration, Energy Efficiency, Safety & Compliance, and Workflow Intelligence — and produces a single composite score that benchmarks the facility against industry standards.

A LabBioScore lab is any laboratory that has undergone a formal LabBioScore™ audit by MacBick Labs and Interiors. After completing the assessment, the lab receives a LabBioScore™ Report, a composite score, and a prioritized improvement roadmap.

The LabBioScore™ is calculated by scoring each of the five pillars from 0 to 20 using a structured rubric with 47 discrete checkpoints. The five pillar scores are summed to produce a total out of 100. There is no weighting applied between pillars — each pillar contributes equally to the final score.

Scores of 71–100 indicate a well-functioning lab meeting or exceeding best-practice benchmarks. Scores of 41–70 indicate moderate performance with identified improvement opportunities. Scores of 40 or below indicate significant gaps requiring systematic attention. The average lab scores 42 on their first MacBick audit.

A standard LabBioScore™ audit takes 2–3 weeks from the initial intake call to delivery of the full report. This includes the on-site or virtual assessment, scoring, analysis, and a debrief call with the MacBick team.

Yes. MacBick offers remote LabBioScore™ audits using structured video walkthroughs and document submission. Remote audits cover the same 47 checkpoints as on-site audits and produce an equivalent report. Some physical verification steps may require photo or video documentation from the lab team.

How much does a LabBioScore™ audit cost?

MacBick currently offers initial LabBioScore™ audits at no cost for qualified labs as part of its audit program. Full remediation consulting, design services, and follow-up assessments are priced separately. Request an audit to discuss eligibility.

MacBick audits research university labs, biotech and pharmaceutical labs, clinical and diagnostic laboratories, K-12 maker and science labs, and government or federal research facilities. The LabBioScore™ rubric is adaptable to facility type and scaled accordingly.

A standard inspection checks for compliance against a regulatory threshold — pass/fail. LabBioScore™ is a continuous performance measurement. It doesn’t just identify violations; it quantifies operational performance, efficiency gaps, and missed optimization opportunities that no regulatory inspection would catch.

You receive your LabBioScore™ Report with your composite score, pillar-by-pillar breakdown, annotated evidence, and a prioritized remediation roadmap. MacBick can then provide consulting, design, and implementation services to address findings — or you can act on the report independently.

MacBick recommends a full LabBioScore™ audit at baseline and then annually, or following any significant change to lab personnel, research scope, equipment, or physical layout. Labs undergoing renovation or compliance review often use LabBioScore™ as a pre- and post-assessment tool.

Complete the request form on this page. A MacBick specialist will follow up within 2 business days to schedule your intake call and confirm eligibility. Audit slots are limited — MacBick takes on a maximum of 5 full audit projects per quarter.
